Are you truly satisfied at work?  Why not?  What’s missing from getting you becoming truly satisfied at work?  You’re highly if not decently paid but you feel something missing.  You get to leave office on the dot but you just feel unhappy and miserable getting through the office hours.  It’s like serving a 8 hour prison term within the cubes.  Your boss entrusts you with new challenging assignments but you do not seemed to like what’s given to you.  You found time wasted on handling human issues than really getting productive.  Have a similar feeling?

There are various reasons for being dissatisfied at work that you may not be even aware of.  Today, we are presenting to you seven reasons why you are dissatisfied at work.

1. You are dissatisfied because you are underpaid.  You have a house and bills to pay off. The family needs to buy the basic necessity and the petrol’s expensive. We got the education to worry next and the living standard is not stopping its gear of raising its price… You name it.

Before we even move a little bit further, are you REALLY underpaid?  Are you moving to a different living standard that requires additional cash?  Make a comparison with your colleagues and the market.  Make an annual calculation.  Is there really a big difference from what your colleagues or the general market is getting?  You’ll feel better this way.  Ok, fine if you do not feel any slightly better with the comparison, our advice is to leave the company that can offer you a higher income.  Or you can find other alternative sources of income.

2. You are dissatisfied because you are deeply engaged in management politics.  You are tired and miserable with handling the needs and demands of your management.  The management are to be treated like kings and you hated it.  You do not respect them in anyway and you feel its meaningless working in the company as there is no real output delivered.  You are just busy handling the management that you are not really doing things that are supposed to be done.

Our advice, take things easy, we cannot avoid politics in the work place.  You can choose to leave.  If you can’t, you can choose not to be affected by the management and have a personal opinion.  Of course, you still have to manage them in some way or another but definitely be affected by their thoughts.

3. You are dissatisfied because you are working on things that are out of your expected job scope.  This is so prevalent that you do not even know until you start feeling the unhappiness in you.  Sometimes, there’s a need to do additional things that is out of your job scope.  Now do a check of yourself.  What are the things that you like to do?  Do you like to the additional things being assigned to you?  Do you have an alternative choice not to work on the additional things?  Like saying “No” to delegation?  Think from another angle, will you get benefit from doing the additional things?

4. You are dissatisfied because you are always working overtime.  You have to work long hours daily… It’s a job that you do not really like.  Of course, you would not feel this way if you are truly passionate about your job.  Passion precedes overtime and momentary rewards.  If you feel that overtimes should be compensated accordingly with the hours spent but it doesn’t work this way for you, you should consider the financial and sales sector then.  If you are in IT and support line, then its tough luck as there is no direct reward for staying late to maintain the servers.  No doubt without passion and rewards, your satisfaction drops gradually overtime.

Our advice is to get some life.  Get a new job that gives you more flexibility in working hours.  Do not let work consumed UNLESS you really love it.

5. You are dissatisfied because your boss is unappreciative of you.  This is a common issue.  The boss does not appreciate your effort.  What’s worst is after proper delivery of quality work, you boss just acknowledges and continued to assign you new tasks… We can only say your boss is the problematic one…

Our advice is to look for something elsewhere that you can find appreciation from. You can’t change your boss until the day everyone leaves him.  If you do not have a greener pasture yet, or you have chosen to stay on with him, you can work on two things while trying to get one.

First, you should not expect appreciation from him.  This will keep your expectations low thus no disappointment.  Secondly, it may be a problem of misaligned expectation between you and your boss.  You do not meet what he REALLY wants (You factor).  Therefore, observe and understand him, and you may find something that he truly wants.  Once he has it, example an important strategic piece of work delivered, he will show his appreciation for you.  Of course, if the boss is truly a unappreciative person, you can turn back to our initial solution, that is to leave for a greener pasture…

6. You are dissatisfied because you are stressed up with the competition in your workplace.  You colleagues are capable and always progressive.  But you seemed to be at the same position all the time (you’ll never move).  You get victimised either being “back-stabbed” through their progression or being the “last in the class”.  Now, do not be pessimistic with other’s people progression.  Look within yourself and find out what is important to you.  Progression may be their most important on hand BUT NOT FOR YOU.  On the bright side, the competition allows you to grow as well, right?  Which means it keeps you afloat of your skill sets when in times of crisis like the recent recession, you have what it takes to go out. ;)

7. You are dissatisfied because you are not climbing the corporate ladder.  You feel that you are “there” already however, you always not in line in the promotion list.  What’s going?  Let’s do a self-check again (and counter checks with colleagues).  Are you really “there” yet?  Have you make a comparison of what the promoted colleagues to find out what you are missing?  Are you meeting your bosses’ expectation (You factor)?  Have you spoken to him about promotion before?  Do not wait for the golden bag of coins to drop before you.  Golden rule, you may not understand the management and the management may not understand you.

What do you think?  Do they answer some of your resentment at work? Are there other reasons you find dissatisfied with?  Share with us.  :D
